Bike Fitting from George

September 30th, 2008 Posted in News

I went down to Golden last week to meet with George Mullen at Peak Cycles to have a look at my Time Trial position.  I was really excited to work with George on this.  I haven’t really ever looked at TT positioning with respect to maximum power, only aerodynamics, so it was really neat to play with a few modifications and see how it affected my power.  Then I can take that new info and see how it changes me aerodynamically.  The most powerful position is usually not the most aero, and likewise, the most aero position is not typically the most powerfull.George has some really cool equipment to measure the results of position change.  I did several 4 min intervals in different position and the computer connected to the fit bike told me the percentage of power on each crank, my efficiency in a pedal stroke, and my heart rate and power, and these were just the numbers I understood.  There were a few other graphs and such that George could read but it didn’t make sense to me!  But anyways, through pretty minor modifications, I found a position that gave me nearly 10 beats lower heart rate at 350Watts, and it felt sooo much easier.  Just that little change aligned my body better and opened all the systems up a bit more.  When you’re just looking for a percent here or there, that could make a difference, so I’m excited to see how it goes on the road.  Sometimes something looks great in the lab but is a different story in a 45 min all out race.  You have to combine everything youve learned in every environment to come to a happy medium. Thanks so much for your time and help George!  If anyone wants to see what a real bike fit can do for you, check out George Mullen and Peak Cycles in Golden, CO.Thanks for checking in!
