Classica San Sebastian…Heat Stroke to Hypothermia
August 4th, 2009 Posted in NewsAfter some much needed rest and downtime the past few weeks, I wrapped up the San Sebastian Classic saturday afternoon with a 5th place for my Garmin teammate, Ryder Hesjedal, so a decent day for us. Could have been better where it not for Millar and Maaskants crashes on the rain soaked descent of the Jaizkabel while in great position! The day started off well, with myself and two of my teammates making it into the breakaway for the day. I was definitely feeling a little flat after 2 1/2 weeks of recovery time! The first 100km were so wicked hot, i was just pounding water bottles, jersey totally unzipped. Then, it being the Basque country, it started pouring rain. Cant be sunny ALL day around there! Svein and I helped keep the break at a good advantage into the deciscive Jaizkabel climb near the finish to give Danny Pate a head start on the climb. By the top we were caught by what was left of a raging peloton and settled in for the last 30 km in cold slippery rain. My job done at that point, i shivered my way to the finish line where Ryder wrapped up a solid day.It was a lot colder and wetter than this on top of the Jaizkabel on race day!!!
