Finally home and on my own couch!!

May 5th, 2008 Posted in News

After my crash at the Tour de Georgia last week, I was inundated with  Get-Well cards, e mails, phone calls, and messages from friends, family, and a lot of people I don’t even know.  And I wanted to thank everyone for that message and let you know that it means a lot to me to hear your support, making a tough time for me much easier.  I am truly lucky to be surrounded by the friends, family, and team that I have.  So Thank You!!!  Also a big thanks to the Doctors and nurses at Athens Regional Hospital, where had collarbone surgery and recovered after the crash. After a long extra week in Georgia I finally made it back to Boulder last night.  I only raced 3 days at the Tour of Georgia but managed to extend my stay by an extra 4 days over my teammates who did the whole race.   I crashed on the 3rd stage and promptly hitched an ambulance ride to Athens, where I hung out at the hospital for a few days and then at a hotel in Athens for another few days until I was fit for travel.  Dealing with travel and airports requires all my energy, believe me.  I was lucky enough to have some guests take care of me in Athens.  Upon hearing of my crash, my wife and my parents both hopped a plane to Georgia to hang out with me for a few days until I could return home.  Once the race finished one of our rock star soigneurs hung out with us in Athens for a while as well, waiting for one of our team cars to be worked on.  In the meantime I slept most of the day except for when Kim gave us the culinary tour of Athens, she being a former resident.   But now its back on Boulder for a week of sleeping and doctor appointments.  I feel well although Im definitely done taking pain medication…that stuff makes me feel terrible.  I can barely get off the couch.  Ill take some pain, at least I’ll feel alive again! Thanks for checking in

Glad to hear that you, your parents and your wife are back home in Colorado.

I called Pat and Carolyn Tucker when I heard about your crash. I told them the story when Bobby J crased in the 99 TDF and split his helmet. Yep, I’ve experienced the angst of having a cycling son, too.

You and Bobby are the only two people I know that have broken their scapula. Bobby did his during his downhill ski racing days. Its amazing that the bone mends quite well on its own.

Best wishes for a quick recovery and many years of racing.

    Timmy,
Glad to hear you’re back at home and recovering. Good luck with your recovery, and don’t push too hard. My recovery from my hip took a long time, and I’m still getting better. Enjoy the little improvements as a good attitude is a big part of a quick recovery! Take care, Rus

    Hey there Tim,

Glad to hear you’re on the road to recovery. The Parkers have all been thinking about you, and staying updated thanks to your Dad, and to the fact that Sam doesn’t go more than a few hours without a cyclingnews.com update…! Also, although none of my injuries has involved a broken bone, I can say with some experience that pain, and not pain meds, are your path to recovery. Listen to it and take Tylenol.

    Heal well,

    Paula

P.S. – I think I know your friend Rus Kappius; is he from Golden?
