The Latest
April 26th, 2008 Posted in NewsJust got off the phone with Timmy. Medically toady his doing very well, however mentally things are starting to set it. I now realizes that he isn’t doing the Giro d’Italia in a week. That was the plan, a grand tour. He’ll be back. After reading the site and he wanted two things; to say thanks for all the comments and support, and he also wanted me to do a ‘normal’ update. So here it is:
When I finished today’s climb up Brasstown Bald, the first words I said to Jeremy Fliss (Team Type 1’s soigneur) can’t be printed here. (After all, this is a family blog, right?)
During the race today I spent the first hour trying to get in the early move. But I sucked at picking the right move so I didn’t. It felt like I spent the next 10 hours trying to ride up Brasstown Bald.
The tour has been fun so far (except for Timmy) I make Fabio listen to the Chatahoochie song (it’s a country song by Alan Jackson). It features the Chatahoochie River, which has some of its headwaters just down the road from where we are right now. Rooming with Fabio during the tour has been lame. His pancreas (that’s what I call his Navigator –which test his blood sugar levels) keeps me up. But at least I know he’s still alive. (Just kidding, Fabio.)
Seriously, though, Team Type 1 was good today. Having five guys in that front group of 50 was pretty impressive. There definitely weren’t any other domestic teams with that or even the ProTour guys. Unfortunately, Brasstown Bald isn’t too much of a tactical climb so numbers don’t really mean that much.
The crowds were smaller than the last time I did the race (2006). But the fans that were there definitely were into it and seemed like they enjoyed it. I heard people yelling to me about Timmy. That was pretty amazing and it was great to hear continued support for him.
Half way up Brasstown I thanked the SRAM rep. for giving me compact cranks. They really helped me make it up there. I was rocking the 34/26.
It was also cool to see my teammate, Matt Wilson, out there riding strong all week. He’s had a broken wrist and has been in serious pain. I have to give him serious props. And how about Moises, our little Mexican climber? He was simply awesome today, finishing sixth on the stage.
We have a three-hour drive to Atlanta now for the final stage. Then I’m off to the A2 Wind Tunnel in Charlotte, N.C. for testing. After that, it’s the Air Force Classic – a full-on circuit race where we get to go around the Pentagon. Then back home to Colorado to help Timmy out any way I can.
thanks,
