Tour of Austria stage 1

July 7th, 2009 Posted in News

Today we thankfully avoided the rain all day while my teammate, svein tuft, who just re-upped his Canadian national tt championship last week, took off the front with one other for a 100km time  trial, but we caught them with a few km to go for a big field sprint.
We went with no radios today, perhaps training for if they decide to ban race radios? A logistics hiccup left us with no radios this week, so we were forced to rely on our on brains to read the race and make it happen! Can you believe it! I had to make some changes, like actually remembering what kilometer the hills and other landmarks are at! And you have to hope the chalkboard motorcycle with the time gaps are accurate! You have to communicate face to face with your teammates more, rather than just being a bunch of robots. So that’s good.  The race radio debate is a tough one. It does make the race more exciting, with the teams less able to control the gaps and know who is in a breakaway. You actually have to pay attention! But radios are nice to warn the riders of upcoming danger, or make a mechanical problem known back at the car. With so much money and everything riding on the teams, its a bummer when a lack of communication creates a big disaster. No worries though.  We will just have to be leading the race after the GC deciding stage to Kitzbuhel  tomorrow so that we have the closest car in the follow caravan!
Thanks for checking in
