Univest Grand Prix

The weekend following US pro was the Univest Grand Prix. The race was run in 4hrs of constant rain with what remained of a hurricane moving through the area. Things went pretty well on the day with Team Type 1 putting 3 riders – including myself, in the final selection of the race. However, we weren’t able to come away with a podium finish as Chris crashed in a corner covered with 4 inches of water inside the last 10km while he was attacking of the front in chase of the two riders who ended up taking the victory. It was nice to do a hard one-day race in the US with live race coverage on NBC, and I’m sure the epic weather made for a great show.
Sunday was a crit and the team’s goal was to try and set up Fabio for a result. I don’t think the team really helped him too much, but in the end he pulled of his season best getting 4th. Not too bad for a 20 year-old new pro and hopefully this will be something he can build on. Fabio is really showing the world that one can do more than just participate but people can be truly competitive while managing their1 diabetes.
