Vuelta Mexico
September 23rd, 2008 Posted in NewsCrazy! About the only fitting word for the race.
Hurricane Ike added some crazy rain and wind. The Mexican roads were beyond crazy. Stray dogs in the field. 60 rider crashes caused by riders grabbing other riders handlebars. Unlucky (or really just ‘un’ smart) 110lb Mexican rider trying to kick Kobza, only to take a couple solid left hooks to his face. Military lockdown, that resulted in 5 military helocopters escorting the race for four hours each day. Every sprint was accompnied by military personal with M16’s to protect the riders. Stages that started with 20km climbs at 8,000ft. 2,000,000 pesos on the line ($200,000) – that much money makes people to some pretty stupid things. And on and on…
The team rode an absolutely perfect race. Protecting the race lead from stage 3 all the way to the end with only 6 riders. Somehow also taking the team competition despite the fact that we were on the front for over 800 km. The race was stressful and extremely difficult, but it’s done now, a few weeks laying low coming up.

Wow. I’m glad the team’s PR guy didn’t know about all the crazy stuff going on. *GRINS*
Great job, Ian. You deserve a break, now!
